Please bring your medicare card and a referral from your medical doctor to your appointment. You will also need to bring any previous imaging films or reports you may have related to your gynaecological condition. If you are having a consult with the Gynaecology Doctor, please bring any previous operation reports or blood test results that are related to your gynaecological condition.
We also ask that you complete the Patient Registration Form and History Questionnaire forms prior to your appointment. These may be emailed to us prior to your appointment or you may bring them on the day of your appointment. If you are unable to complete these forms prior to your appointment, you will need to arrive 20 mins early in order to complete these forms.
If you are having a Pelvic Ultrasound, you will need to bring a signed referral form completed by your referring GP or Specialist.
Most ultrasound scans require minimal preparation. The preparation will depend on the type of scan you are having. If you are having an abdominal scan, you will need a full bladder on arriving to the clinic.
PELVIC ULTRASOUND SCAN
Most pelvic ultrasound scans are performed vaginally (i.e. an "internal" scan, where a sterilized wand is placed into the vagina). Your bladder should be empty for this type of scan. An internal vaginal scan is typically the most accurate way to assess the uterus and ovaries.
This type of scan may be slightly uncomfortable, but is not normally painful.
For women who have never had intercourse, or decline to have a vaginal scan, an abdominal scan can be performed. If you are having an abdominal scan, you will need to drink one litre of water at least one hour before your appointment and hold your bladder until your scan is performed.
DEEP ENDOMETRIOSIS SCAN
This is an internal ultrasound scan (i.e. vaginal scan), where a sterilised ultrasound wand is placed into the vagina to perform the scan. Please ensure your bladder is empty prior to your deep endometriosis scan. During this scan, the doctor may insert some extra ultrasound gel into the vagina with a plastic tube. This extra gel allows the doctor to see the bowel and structures in the pelvis more clearly when looking for deep endometriosis nodules.
There can be some mild discomfort during the deep endometriosis scan, especially if you have a history of pelvic pain or painful intercourse. If you have a history of pelvic pain, please take some painkillers (such as panadol or nurofen) about an hour before your appointment.
SALINE INFUSION SONOHYSTEROGRAPHY (SIS)
The SIS scan needs to be performed within the first 12 days of your menstrual cycle, and preferably within 7 days of finishing your period. You will be asked to empty your bladder prior to the SIS scan. You should take nurofen or panadol one hour prior to the procedure, as you may experience some pelvic discomfort during or after the procedure.
HYSTEROSALPINGO-CONTRAST-SONOGRAPHY (HYCOSY)
The HyCoSy scan needs to be performed within the first 12 days of your menstrual cycle, and preferably within 7 days of finishing your period. You will be asked to empty your bladder and perform a urine pregnancy test prior to the HyCoSy scan. You should take nurofen or panadol one hour prior to the procedure, as you may experience some pelvic discomfort during or after the procedure. It is a good idea to have somebody with you to drive you home in case you get some pelvic cramps.
