Associate Professor Shannon Reid MBBS(Hons) PhD FRANZCOG FRCSC DDU is a Gynaecologist, Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeon, and Gynaecological Ultrasound Specialist. She is the founder and director of Sonacare Women’s Health and Ultrasound. She is an Endometriosis Specialist who provides her patients with comprehensive care, including specialised endometriosis ultrasound assessments and advanced laparoscopic surgery for excision of severe stage disease. She is internationally recognized for her work in endometriosis research (PhD, University of Sydney). She is a conjoint Associate Professor at the Western Sydney University and has clinical appointments at Sydney Day Surgery, Strathfield Private Hospital, Sydney Southwest Private Hospital and Campbelltown Private Hospital.
She completed a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada), followed by completion of a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree with Honours at the University of Sydney in 2004. She then completed her specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in both Australia and Canada, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG), as well as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC).
During her specialty training, she completed a two year fellowship in Early Pregnancy/Gynaecological Ultrasound and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery at Nepean Hospital. She then completed a second fellowship in Pelvic Pain, Endometriosis and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery at the BC Women's Centre for Pelvic Pain and Endometriosis, BC Women's Hospital, University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada). She has completed advanced training in performing laparoscopy of the highest skill level (AGES Level 6), including robotic-assisted surgery.
She has a special interest in the diagnosis and management pelvic pain/endometriosis, as well early pregnancy complications. A/Professor Reid has numerous research publications on the use of pre-operative ultrasound (Gel SVG) for the assessment of women with suspected endometriosis, and completed her PhD thesis on this topic. She has written book chapters on endometriosis ultrasound diagnosis and continues to conduct research in this field.
She is an invited speaker for national and international conferences as well as an instructor for both laparoscopic and ultrasound training courses.
