About Shannon Reid

Associate Professor Shannon Reid MBBS (Hons) PhD FRANZCOG FRCSC DDU is a specialist gynaecologist, advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgeon, and gynaecological ultrasound specialist. She is the Founder and Director of Sonacare Women’s Health and Ultrasound and a Conjoint Associate Professor at Western Sydney University.

A/Prof Reid has a particular focus on the diagnosis and management of endometriosis, adenomyosis and complex pelvic conditions. Her practice brings together specialist gynaecological assessment, advanced pelvic ultrasound and minimally invasive surgery, allowing patients to receive care informed by both detailed imaging and surgical expertise.

Research and Endometriosis Ultrasound

A/Prof Reid has been at the forefront of advances in endometriosis ultrasound. Her PhD with the Condous research team at the University of Sydney focused on the pre-operative ultrasound prediction and mapping of endometriosis, including landmark research on the uterine “sliding sign” and gel sonovaginography (Gel SVG). Techniques from this work have been incorporated into international consensus recommendations for specialist endometriosis ultrasound assessment.

Her research has also examined adenomyosis, ovarian mobility, deep endometriosis and gel sonovaginography, with a focus on improving disease detection, mapping and surgical planning.

She has published extensively, contributed book chapters, and remains involved in research and education in this field.

Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery

A/Prof Reid is an advanced minimally invasive gynaecological surgeon with extensive training in laparoscopic and robotic surgery, including the surgical management of endometriosis and complex pelvic disease.

Her dual advanced training in gynaecological ultrasound and minimally invasive surgery allows her to assess and map disease before surgery and use these findings to inform counselling, surgical planning and multidisciplinary referral when required.

Specialist Training

A/Prof Reid completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, followed by a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with Honours at the University of Sydney in 2004.

She subsequently completed specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in both Australia and Canada and is a Fellow of both the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG) and the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC).

During her specialist training, she completed a two-year fellowship in Early Pregnancy and Gynaecological Ultrasound and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery at Nepean Hospital. She then undertook a further fellowship in Pelvic Pain, Endometriosis and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery at the BC Women’s Centre for Pelvic Pain and Endometriosis, BC Women’s Hospital, University of British Columbia.

She holds the Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (DDU) and has completed advanced training (AGES Level 6) in complex laparoscopic and robotic surgery.

Clinical, Academic and Teaching Roles

A/Prof Reid has clinical appointments at Sydney Day Surgery, Strathfield Private Hospital, Sydney Southwest Private Hospital and Campbelltown Private Hospital, where she performs gynaecological and advanced minimally invasive surgery.

She is a supervisor for the advanced AGES laparoscopic surgery fellowship at Nepean Hospital, contributing to the training of future advanced gynaecological surgeons.

A/Prof Reid is also an invited speaker at national and international meetings and an instructor in advanced laparoscopic surgery and gynaecological ultrasound training.
