An Integrated Approach to Care

What sets Sonacare apart is the integration of advanced gynaecological ultrasound expertise with specialist endometriosis and gynaecological care.

Sonacare is led by Associate Professor Shannon Reid, a specialist gynaecologist with expertise in gynaecological ultrasound, endometriosis care and advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery.

Specialised pelvic ultrasound examinations are personally performed by A/Prof Reid, who discusses the findings with you during the same appointment and considers them alongside your symptoms and clinical assessment to develop an individualised management plan — whether treatment is conservative, medical or surgical.

Conjoint Associate Professor Shannon Reid, BSc MBBS (Hons) PhD (Medicine) FRANZCOG FRCSC DDU, is the Founder and Director of Sonacare Women's Health and Ultrasound. She is a specialist gynaecologist with a focus on endometriosis and adenomyosis, an advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgeon, and a gynaecological ultrasound specialist.

A/Prof Reid's PhD focused on the use of ultrasound to predict endometriosis pre-operatively. Her research has made an important contribution to modern endometriosis ultrasound, including techniques that have subsequently been incorporated into international consensus recommendations for specialist endometriosis ultrasound assessment.

At Sonacare, A/Prof Reid personally performs specialised endometriosis and adenomyosis ultrasound examinations, integrating advanced imaging, clinical assessment and surgical expertise to develop an individualised management plan for each patient, whether treatment is conservative, medical or surgical.

Booking with A/Prof Reid

A GP referral is required for a specialist consultation with A/Prof Reid. If endometriosis or adenomyosis is suspected, please ask your GP to also provide a referral for a “complex pelvic ultrasound.” Your ultrasound will be performed at Sonacare and integrated with your specialist assessment and ongoing care.

Modern Endometriosis Diagnosis Starts with Ultrasound

The Australian Living Evidence Guideline recommends transvaginal ultrasound as the first-line investigation for suspected endometriosis. Specialist imaging can identify deep endometriosis and pelvic adhesions, assess the location and extent of disease, and help guide further management.

Ultrasound is also recommended as the first-line imaging investigation for suspected adenomyosis, which commonly occurs alongside endometriosis.

What is a Deep Endometriosis Scan?

Why Specialist endometriosis Ultrasound Matters

A routine pelvic ultrasound may identify some gynaecological conditions, but it is not designed to provide the same detailed assessment as a specialised endometriosis ultrasound.

Importantly, a normal pelvic ultrasound does not exclude endometriosis or pelvic adhesions.

A specialist deep endometriosis pelvic ultrasound examines the pelvis systematically for signs of endometriosis, adenomyosis and other complex pelvic pathology. The examination requires specialist expertise in gynaecological imaging and uses internationally recognised consensus approaches for the ultrasound assessment of endometriosis and adenomyosis.

  • Dynamic assessment – the examination assesses how the pelvic organs move in relation to one another, including the sliding sign and ovarian mobility, rather than relying only on static ultrasound images.
  • Detailed mapping of disease – the scan systematically assesses areas where endometriosis may occur, including the ovaries, pouch of Douglas, bowel, bladder, ureters and other pelvic structures.
  • Targeted assessment – areas of concern can be examined in real time and considered alongside your symptoms and clinical history.
  • Advanced ultrasound techniques when required – techniques such as gel sonovaginography may be used in selected patients to improve visualisation of deep endometriosis, particularly within the posterior pelvis.
  • Planning before surgery – identifying the location and extent of deep endometriosis before an operation can help determine the anticipated complexity of surgery and whether input from a colorectal surgeon, urologist or other specialist may be required.
  • Better informed discussions about treatment – detailed imaging can help inform discussions about treatment options, fertility considerations and, when surgery is being considered, its potential complexity and risks.
  • Integrated clinical interpretation – at Sonacare, your ultrasound findings are considered alongside your symptoms and clinical assessment to help develop an individualised management plan, whether treatment is conservative, medical or surgical.
