An Integrated Approach to Care

Sonacare offers a highly specialised, integrated model of care for endometriosis, adenomyosis and other complex pelvic conditions, bringing together advanced pelvic ultrasound and specialist gynaecological care in one place.

Your ultrasound findings are discussed with you by the specialist immediately after your scan and considered alongside your symptoms and clinical assessment, helping to streamline your diagnosis and treatment journey and develop a clear, individualised management plan — whether treatment is conservative, medical or surgical.

Where appropriate, gel sonovaginography (SVG) may be used to improve visualisation of deep endometriosis.

Detailed imaging can help define the location and extent of disease, guide treatment decisions and support surgical planning when required.

meet the specialist

Conjoint Associate Professor Shannon Reid, BSc MBBS (Hons) PhD (Medicine) FRANZCOG FRCSC DDU, is the Founder and Director of Sonacare Women's Health and Ultrasound. She is a specialist gynaecologist with a focus on endometriosis and adenomyosis, an advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgeon, and a gynaecological ultrasound specialist.

A/Prof Reid’s PhD research at the University of Sydney helped shape modern specialist endometriosis ultrasound assessment, including techniques used to improve the pre-operative detection and mapping of deep endometriosis that have since been incorporated into international consensus recommendations.

Her dual advanced training in gynaecological ultrasound and minimally invasive surgery provides an advanced clinical perspective  on endometriosis care, particularly when detailed disease mapping, surgical planning or multidisciplinary input is required.

Why Specialist endometriosis Ultrasound Matters

A routine pelvic ultrasound is not the same as a specialised endometriosis assessment. Specialist ultrasound systematically evaluates the pelvis for deep endometriosis, adenomyosis, adhesions and other complex pathology, and can provide important information for treatment and surgical planning.

A deep endometriosis pelvic ultrasound requires specialist expertise in gynaecological imaging and uses internationally recognised consensus approaches for the ultrasound assessment of endometriosis and adenomyosis.

  • Dynamic assessment – the examination assesses how the pelvic organs move in relation to one another, including the sliding sign and ovarian mobility, rather than relying only on static ultrasound images.
  • Detailed mapping of disease – the scan systematically assesses areas where endometriosis may occur, including the ovaries, pouch of Douglas, bowel, bladder, ureters and other pelvic structures.
  • Targeted assessment – areas of concern can be examined in real time and considered alongside your symptoms and clinical history.
  • Advanced ultrasound techniques when required – techniques such as gel sonovaginography may be used in selected patients to improve visualisation of deep endometriosis, particularly within the posterior pelvis.
  • Planning before surgery – identifying the location and extent of deep endometriosis before an operation can help determine the anticipated complexity of surgery and whether input from a colorectal surgeon, urologist or other specialist may be required.
  • Better informed discussions about treatment – detailed imaging can help inform discussions about treatment options, fertility considerations and, when surgery is being considered, its potential complexity and risks.
  • Integrated clinical interpretation – at Sonacare, your ultrasound findings are considered alongside your symptoms and clinical assessment to help develop an individualised management plan, whether treatment is conservative, medical or surgical.
